Jo White

Dr. Jo White is a Senior Lecturer in the Speech and Hearing Sciences Division at Queen Margaret University (QMU), part of the School of Health Sciences. She serves as the Audiology research lead for QMU’s Clinical Audiology, Speech and Language Research Centre (CASL) and is Programme Leader for the MSc (post-registration) in Rehabilitative Audiology. Her academic background includes a PhD in Psychology from the University of Manchester (2004), an MSc in Audiology from Manchester University (1992), and a BA (Hons) in Psychology from the University of St Andrews (1991).

Her research focuses on early language learning and literacy in hearing-impaired children, cochlear implants, auditory verbal therapy, and hearing care for older adults in residential care settings. A notable achievement includes securing a £75,938 Abbeyfield PhD Studentship (2016–2019) to investigate hearing care provision in care home environments. She also supervises PhD students in these areas.

Teaching responsibilities span modules on paediatric audiology, implantable devices, and aural habilitation across QMU’s Diploma in Hearing Aid Audiology, MSc (pre-registration) in Audiology, and MSc Speech and Language Therapy programmes. She has served as an external examiner for audiology programmes at Aston University (2008–2013) and University College London (since 2015).
