Jo Applin is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor in the History of Art at The Courtauld Institute of Art. Specializing in modern and contemporary art, she joined The Courtauld in 2016 after teaching at the University of York. She has held leadership roles, including Head of the History of Art Department (2018–2021) and membership on The Courtauld’s Governing Board. Her research focuses on sculpture, feminist art, and 20th-century art history, with notable publications like Lee Lozano: Not Working (2018) and Eccentric Objects (2012). Applin has curated major exhibitions, including Flesh (2016) and Abstract Erotic (2025). She is a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and has received prestigious awards like the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2012).
Her editorial roles include editor of Oxford Art Journal and contributions to Tate Papers and Art Journal. Applin’s work bridges academic scholarship and public engagement, with articles in Artforum and Times Literary Supplement. She serves on advisory boards for institutions like the Eva Hesse Charitable Foundation and the Austrian Ludwig Foundation.
