Jiat Hwee Chang is an Associate Professor and Research Leader of the Science, Technology and Society Cluster at the National University of Singapore (NUS), holding a joint appointment with the Department of Architecture in the College of Design and Engineering. He commenced his Cluster Leader role on 1 July 2022.
He holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. His interdisciplinary research bridges architecture, environmental studies, and Science, Technology, and Society (STS), focusing on socio-technoscientific dimensions of the climate crisis.
Core research domains include:
- Thermal politics and climate change adaptation
- Energy infrastructure transitions toward low-carbon futures
- Critical heritage studies of carbon-intensive built environments
His scholarly impact is evidenced by the International Planning History Society Book Prize (2018) for A Genealogy of Tropical Architecture: Colonial Networks, Nature and Technoscience, alongside a shortlisting for the European Association for Southeast Asian Studies Humanities Book Prize (2017). Chang co-authored Everyday Modernism: Architecture and Society in Singapore (2022), examining Singapore's architectural evolution through social lenses.
