Dr Jeremy Nicholas Airey is a Lecturer in Science Education at the Department of Education, University of York. With a PhD in molecular immunogenetics from Cambridge and postdoctoral experience in Amsterdam and MIT, he transitioned to education after completing teacher training at Homerton College. Currently serving as Deputy Head of Department since 2022, he has held leadership roles including Director of Undergraduate Studies and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Champion.
His research focuses on secondary-level biology and psychology education, concept acquisition in challenging topics, and effectiveness of continuing professional development (CPD) for science educators. Recent work explores the intersection of human spaceflight and STEM education through collaborative projects with the University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG).

As co-investigator in the Does human spaceflight affect the perception and uptake of STEM subjects? project (2015-2018), he contributed to understanding educational impacts through multiple publications in journals like International Journal of Science Education Part B and Research in Science and Technological Education.
Scientific awards include the Vice Chancellor's Teaching Award (2019). He regularly participates in ASE and ATP conferences, serves on the ASE Safeguards in Science Committee, and contributes to the British Psychological Society's Standing Committee on Pre-tertiary Education.
