About
Jennifer Pap is Professor of French & Francophone Studies in the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures at the University of Denver’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She also contributes to Gender and Women's Studies, weaving interdisciplinary perspectives into her teaching and research.
Her academic journey includes a Ph.D. in French Literature from Princeton University (1989) and a BA in French from Swarthmore College (1981). These foundational experiences shaped her deep engagement with French literary and cultural history.
Her research explores the convergence of French poetry and visual art in the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly under conditions of war and political crisis. She has published extensively on poets such as Guillaume Apollinaire, René Char, Dominique Fourcade, and especially Leslie Kaplan, whose politically charged and experimental works she has translated. Her teaching reflects these interests through seminars like 'Perspectives on Occupied France,' 'Masques du moi,' 'La nature et les animaux,' and 'L'Art de la Traduction.'
Her recent publications center on literary translation, especially of Kaplan’s radical poetic works. These translations not only make vital texts accessible to English readers but also contribute to broader discourses on political poetry, feminism, and post-1968 French intellectual life.
While no formal scientific awards are mentioned, her scholarly collaborations and publications in significant presses like Commune Editions reflect recognition within her field.
Jennifer Pap actively collaborates with poets and scholars, notably Julie Carr, on translation and critical projects. Her work bridges academic scholarship and poetic practice, contributing to both literary studies and contemporary poetic movements. She continues to research and translate Kaplan’s writings, including the novel Depuis Maintenant: Miss Nobody Knows.
