Jennifer Rathbun

Jennifer Rathbun is a Professor of Spanish and serves as Chair of both the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures and the Department of Philosophy at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, within the College of Sciences and Humanities.

Dr. Rathbun specializes in Contemporary Latin American Literature with a focus on poetry and translation. Her scholarly work bridges creative writing and literary analysis, exploring themes of identity, language, and cultural exchange through both original compositions and translations of Hispanic authors. Her research interests include Contemporary Latin American Poetry, Literary Translation, Bilingual Literature, Spanish Language Pedagogy, and Creative Writing, demonstrating how poetry serves as a medium for cultural dialogue across linguistic boundaries.

Dr. Rathbun's publications reveal a consistent engagement with contemporary Hispanic poetry, particularly from Mexico, Colombia, and the broader Latin American region. Her work shows particular interest in how poetic forms can express complex cultural identities and social realities through both creative and translated works.

She was awarded the prestigious 2021 Ambroggio Prize by the Academy of American Poets for her translation of Cardinal in My Window With a Mask on its Beak by Colombian author Carlos Aguasaco. This recognition highlights her significant contribution to bringing Hispanic poetry to English-speaking audiences.

As Associate Editor of Ashland Poetry Press, Rathbun plays an important role in the broader literary community beyond her university responsibilities.
