About
Jeffrey S. Allen is the John F. and Joan M. Calder Endowed Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Technological University (MTU), serving as Associate Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He holds a PhD, MS, and BSE in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from the University of Dayton.
His research focuses on capillary flow in PEM fuel cells, interfacial transport phenomena, and microgravity fluid physics. Key areas include liquid water management in fuel cells, evaporating/condensing films, and cryogenic propellant behavior. He leads the Microfluidics & Interfacial Transport Laboratory and collaborates with the GM Energy Lab and Wind Tunnel facilities.
Dr. Allen’s publications span 30+ years, emphasizing experimental and computational studies of two-phase flow, phase-change heat transfer, and porous media transport. Notable contributions include capillary penetration methods for wettability measurement and neutron imaging for cryogenic phase-change analysis.
He teaches courses in fluid mechanics, energy conversion, and microfluidics. Supervised students include Ezequiel Medici (PhD 2010), Vinaykumar Konduru (MS 2010), and Derek Fultz (MS 2007). His work bridges fundamental science and engineering applications, addressing challenges in energy systems and space exploration.
