Jean-Claude Cheynet is a Professor at Paris-Sorbonne University since 1995 and an elected member (2012) of the Academy of Europe in the History & Archaeology section. He holds multiple leadership positions including Director of the UMR 8167 Orient-Méditerranée research center (2010-present), Director of the LABEX RESMED French research cluster (2011-present), and Director of the Center for Byzantine Studies (since 2000). He has been a member of the Institut universitaire de France since 2008.
His research focuses on Byzantine history with specialized expertise in sigillography, military structures, administrative systems, and elite social dynamics of the Byzantine Empire.
