Antonio Rigo is a Full Professor of Byzantine Civilization at Ca' Foscari University of Venice. He holds a doctorate from Bologna and has served as Professor of Byzantine History at the University of Basilicata (1994-2001) before joining Ca' Foscari in 2001. His research focuses on Byzantine and post-Byzantine literature, religious history, ascetic-spiritual texts, heretical movements, and theological controversies of the 14th century.

His research spans Eastern Christendom, the Balkans, the Middle East, and Christian-Islamic interactions. He leads projects on Byzantine anti-heretical compilations and 11th-12th century Byzantine-Latin relations.
