Jay Ramasubramanyam

Jay Ramasubramanyam is an Assistant Professor in the Law & Society Program at York University's Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS). He holds a PhD from Carleton University and degrees from Birmingham City University and Victoria University of Wellington. His research focuses on forced migration, refugee law, postcolonial theory, and South Asian studies, emphasizing power asymmetries and colonial legacies in international law frameworks.

He has published on regional refugee regimes in South Asia, critiques of the 1951 Refugee Convention's colonial foundations, and India's engagement with global refugee norms. His work integrates TWAIL (Third World Approaches to International Law) methodologies and postcolonial critique.

• Teaching Excellence: Awarded the Contract Instructor Teaching Award (2021).
• Professional Experience: Formerly with UNHCR and ICRC, and held visiting roles at the American Bar Association and the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law.

His research also addresses statelessness, race, and racialization in refugee contexts, with a focus on marginalized communities' struggles for recognition and rights.
