Jay Needham is a Professor in the Radio, Television, and Digital Media department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale's School of Media Arts. He is also the Director of Graduate Studies for the MFA program in Media Arts.

His creative and scholarly work focuses on cross-modal sound experiences, acoustic ecology, and media theory. He creates site-specific sound installations and documentary radio works, with recent projects displayed in the Frank Gehry-designed BioMuseo in Panama.
Needham co-founded the academic journal Resonance: The Journal of Sound and Culture and serves on the Humanities and Social Science Expert Group for the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). His work has been published in journals like Exposure, Soundscape, and Leonardo Music Journal.
As a hearing-divergent artist, his research explores multimodal sound sensing. He has presented at institutions including CalArts, Art Institute of Chicago, and Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis.
