Sarah Lewison

Sarah Lewison is a Professor in the Radio, Television, and Digital Media department at Southern Illinois University's College of Communication and Media Programs. She holds an M.F.A. from the University of California, San Diego (2001) and maintains an active research and creative practice focused on media, ecology, and social change. Her office is located in Comm 1050E and she can be reached at slewison@siu.edu.

Her research interests include Media and Social Change, Ecological Pedagogy, Experimental Performance, Environmental Media, Political Ecology, Ecocriticism, and Ecofeminism. She approaches environmental issues through a critical lens that considers both ecological and social dimensions, examining how marginalized communities experience and respond to environmental challenges.

Lewison is nationally noted for her documentary Fat of the Land (1995), which screened on PBS and in museums, festivals and community spaces worldwide, and stimulated the do-it-yourself waste-grease bio-diesel movement. Her scholarly writing has appeared in international publications including Tema (Denmark), Journal of Northeast Studies (Hamburg, Germany), Area (Chicago), and 'Failure! Experiments in Aesthetics and Social Practices' (Aesthetics and Protest Pub., LA).

Her recent publications demonstrate consistent engagement with ecological rescaling, political ecology of sound, land politics, and environmental justice. Her work often explores the intersections of human and non-human worlds, examining how environmental issues are mediated through cultural practices and artistic interventions.

As an educator, Professor Lewison teaches courses related to media and social change, ecological pedagogy, and experimental performance. She maintains an active creative practice alongside her scholarly work, with projects spanning documentary film, installation, and live art.
