Jason P. Barr

Dr. Jason P. Barr serves as Associate Professor of Music in the Fine Arts Department at Glenville State College, where he has taught since 2012 following his tenure as band director for Horry County Schools and house saxophonist at Myrtle Beach House of Blues. He instructs Applied Woodwinds and Music Theory courses while directing the Woodwind Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Jazz Combo ensembles.

His educational foundation includes a Doctor of Education from Walden University (2018), Master's in Jazz Pedagogy from West Virginia University (2012), and Bachelor's in Music Education from Marshall University (2003). As a performing artist, he has collaborated with jazz luminaries including Jerry Coker, Terry Gibbs, and Preservation Hall Jazz Band while appearing at major events like the 2012 Democratic National Convention opening ceremonies.

Professor Barr's scholarly focus centers on jazz pedagogy and performance practice, demonstrated through his founding presidency of the Marshall University Chapter of the International Association of Jazz Educators and active membership in the Jazz Education Network. His professional work emphasizes practical jazz education methodologies and historical preservation, evidenced by lectures for the Gilmer County Historical Society and direction of award-winning student ensembles at regional festivals.

His musical contributions include recordings such as The Andrew Thielen Big Band (2003) and N'Tranze III (2011), alongside performances with major acts including Kool and the Gang and Salt N Pepa. He remains actively engaged through the West Virginia Music Educators Association, where he contributes to advancing music education standards across the region.
