Jason Gaines

Dr. Jason Gaines is a Senior Professor of Practice and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Jewish Studies at Tulane University. He holds a PhD and MA from Brandeis University in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, along with a BA from Sarah Lawrence College. His research focuses on gender studies (particularly biblical consent), biblical poetry, the Torah/Pentateuch, and social justice. He has authored a book, The Poetic Priestly Source (2015), and multiple articles.

He previously taught at institutions including College of the Holy Cross, Smith College, and Fairfield University. His teaching spans Hebrew Bible, Jewish studies, religious studies, and Judaism. Office hours are M/W/F 12–1:30 PM via Zoom, with T/Th appointments available. His office is in the Jewish Studies Building at 7031 Freret St., room 209.
