Dr. Janie Lee is an Associate Professor of Linguistics in the Department of English and Linguistics at the University of Mary Washington, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics (2010) and an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a B.A. in English Education from Ewha Women's University in South Korea. Her doctoral dissertation focused on Linguistic Citizenship and Ideologies of Americanness in a U.S. Naturalization Class.
Her research expertise spans sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and linguistic anthropology, with concentrated interests in the intersections of race, immigration, citizenship, and identity formation. Current projects examine U.S. citizenship frameworks in language policy/education and new investigations into linguistic competence and racial dynamics in South Korean society.
