Janie Brennan is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU), part of the McKelvey School of Engineering. She joined WashU in 2015 after earning her PhD from Purdue University, where she studied protein-based adhesives under Dr. Julie C. Liu.
Her research focuses on evidence-based teaching methods to enhance engineering education, emphasizing hands-on learning, process safety, and laboratory instruction. She directs undergraduate studies in EECE and coordinates summer research programs like the WashU Summer Engineering Fellowship. She advises the WashU iGEM team and serves on the EECE Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (EDI) committee.
Brennan holds a BS (2010) and PhD (2015) in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University. She is an active member of ASEE and AIChE professional societies.
Notably, she received the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award (2023) alongside Will Yeoh. Her work aims to remove barriers in engineering education and foster inclusive learning environments.
