Janice Victor

Janice Victor is an Associate Professor in the Department of Aboriginal Health within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge. Her research centers on cultural psychology, examining how sociocultural environments influence well-being through interdisciplinary approaches integrating anthropology, sociology, Indigenous studies, and geography.

Dr. Victor earned her PhD in Psychology (Culture & Human Development) from the University of Saskatchewan in 2014. As a third-generation Settler raised in Treaty 6 territory, she brings critical perspectives on decolonization to her academic work.

Her research program explores cultural psychology, Indigenous self-determination, holistic health, and arts-based methodologies. She specializes in narrative inquiry and community-engaged research, focusing on Indigenous youth wellness, cultural reclamation, and decolonizing frameworks across health, education, and justice systems.

Victor's publications consistently employ visual and narrative methods to investigate Indigenous identity, place attachment, and cultural reconnection. Her work demonstrates a sustained commitment to Blackfoot and First Nations communities through photovoice, film-based pedagogy, and reciprocal leadership models that center Indigenous ways of knowing.

Though currently not accepting new graduate students, her research has received media attention including UNews coverage of storytelling projects addressing Indigenous youth homelessness. She maintains an active artistic practice alongside her academic work as reflected on her professional website.
