Janice B. Owens

Dr. Janice B. Owens is a Professor at the College of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences of South Carolina State University, where she has served for 30 years. As Director of Clinical Experiences, Evaluation and Certification, she oversees teacher education programs, supervises clinical experiences, and maintains partnerships with Pre-K-12 schools and the State Department of Education.

• Education: Ph.D. in Education (University of South Carolina, 1990), M.A. in Literacy Education (University of South Carolina, 1979), and B.A. in Early Childhood Education (Benedict College, 1975).

Her research focuses on African American family structures, shadow families, and cognitive skills in rural students. Publications include works on multicultural education, curriculum development, and ethnographic studies of marginalized communities.

Dr. Owens has taught courses such as ED 300, ED 430, RED 506, and EDU519. Her career includes roles as Acting Dean, Reading Specialist, and leadership in early childhood education at Benedict College.
