Janet Kawada is a Professor in the Department of 3D Fine Arts at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She is also an alumna of Lasell University, where she initially earned an associate’s degree in Medical Secretary before pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from MassArt and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her career spans a 25-year teaching tenure at MassArt and extensive work as a fiber artist and installation creator.
Kawada’s artistic practice explores themes of home, memory, and connection to the environment through large-scale installations, including origami-shaped metal screening sculptures in natural settings. She curated the 2017 exhibition Is This Something? at Lasell’s Wedeman Gallery and contributed to the university’s ceramics program via financial support for equipment and studio renovations. Her philosophy emphasizes art’s role in nurturing the soul and fostering human connection.
