Janelle L. White is a Lecturer in the Department of Women and Gender Studies at San Francisco State University (SFSU). She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Michigan (2005), focusing on U.S.-based Black women's mobilization against sexual and domestic violence. Her work integrates activism and academia, addressing systemic issues in gender-based violence and the prison industrial complex.
Before joining SFSU, White served as Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of New Orleans (UNO) and directed the UNO Women’s Center. She has partnered with organizations such as the YWCA Rape Crisis Program, INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence, and the Hate Crimes Project of the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of New Orleans, demonstrating a 15+ year commitment to ending violence against women.
Her teaching portfolio includes courses on the prison industrial complex and the historical experiences of African American women. She currently teaches at SFSU and hosts weekly Zoom office hours.
