Dr. Jane Spooner is a Senior Lecturer in Conservation of Wall Paintings at The Courtauld Institute of Art. With professional experience as a wall paintings conservator in the UK and internationally, she previously served as Historic Buildings Curator (2003-2017) and Head of Historic Buildings (2017-2022) at Historic Royal Palaces. In these roles, she managed conservation projects, authored Statements of Significance, curated exhibitions at sites including the Tower of London and Banqueting House, and oversaw historic buildings across multiple royal palaces.
Her research examines medieval English royal wall paintings with focus on iconography, design, artists' original materials, techniques, and workshop practices. Additional interests include architectural polychromy, the role of antiquarians in preservation, and the history of wall painting conservation methodologies. Her doctoral research at The Courtauld investigated these themes through technical analysis of artworks.
