Jane Monckton Smith

Jane Monckton Smith serves as a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Director of the Centre for Learning & Innovation in Public Protection. She leads the Homicide Research Group, engaging undergraduate and postgraduate students in the analysis of 358 criminal homicide cases. Her professional collaborations span Gloucestershire Constabulary, Staffordshire Constabulary, Thames Valley Constabulary, Advocacy After Fatal Domestic Abuse (AAFDA), Suzy Lamplugh Trust, Protection Against Stalking, and Network for Surviving Stalking.

Her research centers on critical violence intersections including stalking-homicide relationships, family experiences after criminal homicide, and professional responses to domestic abuse and coercive control. Key projects include the DART initiative (evaluated with Staffordshire police and health trust), Domestic Homicide Reviews analysis, forensic narrative construction in domestic homicide, and sexual assault-homicide linkages. Her work directly informs policy through investigations for the Suzy Lamplugh Trust and AAFDA partnerships.

As a former police officer, Dr. Monckton Smith delivers specialized training to frontline professionals on risk/threat assessment in stalking and coercive control. The Centre she directs serves as an innovation hub for evidence-based public protection tools, with ongoing projects examining professional responses to domestic abuse and stalking through multi-agency pilots.
