About
Jane Balbo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Ohio University. She also serves as a board-certified family practice physician at Campus Care, providing primary care to Ohio University students with a focus on transgender health, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Her research and clinical interests center on LGBTQ+ health, particularly transgender medicine. She emphasizes that transgender care extends beyond hormones and surgery to include respectful communication, use of preferred pronouns, and comprehensive preventative care. Balbo is dedicated to integrating transgender and sexual health education into medical training and advocates for universal primary care provider competency in these areas.
She collaborates with the Ohio University LGBT Center and medical school colleagues to coordinate the LGBT health lab and educate medical students on STIs and gender-affirming care. Her clinical approach treats every patient interaction as an educational opportunity, covering birth control options, STI risks, and behavioral health.
Balbo has been instrumental in developing protocols for transgender health care at Ohio University, inspired by a 2011 Student Senate resolution to include transgender health services in student insurance. She believes all primary care physicians should be equipped to provide transgender care rather than relying solely on specialists.
