Jan Rupp

Professor Jan Rupp serves as Coordinator of the DZIF Academy and Deputy Coordinator for Health System-Associated Infections at the University of Lübeck, with operational locations spanning Hamburg, Lübeck, Borstel, and Riems. His work is centrally focused on combating healthcare-associated infections through coordinated research efforts across multiple German university hospital sites.

Dr. Rupp's research concentrates on critical challenges in infection control within healthcare settings, particularly focusing on multidrug-resistant organisms. His work spans surgical infections, bloodstream infections, and antibiotic resistance patterns. He investigates the complex relationship between antibiotic usage, colonization with resistant pathogens like Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci, and clinical outcomes in vulnerable patient populations including those undergoing major surgery or receiving dialysis treatment.

Professor Rupp leads or coordinates several significant multicenter research initiatives including TIARA (examining MDRO colonization in surgical patients), BLOOMY-PREDICT (prognostic modeling for bloodstream infections), AEGON (studying antibiotic impact on VRE spread), dialysis patient pneumonia prevention, and R-Net (a comprehensive network for monitoring multidrug-resistant bacteria). These projects involve collaboration across multiple German research sites including Bonn, Cologne, Gießen, Marburg, Langen, Hamburg, Lübeck, Borstel, Riems, Heidelberg, Munich, and Tübingen.

His work through the DZIF Academy Clinical Trial Centers infrastructure demonstrates a strong commitment to translating research findings into practical infection control measures that improve patient outcomes in complex healthcare environments. Dr. Rupp's research particularly addresses the challenges faced by immunocompromised patients who experience disproportionately high infection rates and mortality from otherwise treatable pathogens.
