Jan Roodenburg

Prof. Jan Roodenburg is an Extraordinary Professor of Maxillofacial Oncology at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Medical Sciences. As a maxillofacial surgical oncologist, his expertise spans laser surgery, photodynamic therapy, premalignant lesions, and supportive care in cancer treatment. He leads the Oncology Section at the UMCG and serves as Clinical Director of the Field Hospital under the 400 Medical Battalion, combining academic roles with military reserve responsibilities (Lkol rank).

His research focuses on optimizing oncological care through interdisciplinary collaboration, evidenced by contributions to telemedicine frameworks, nutritional support strategies, and educational initiatives like the Summer School Oncology Groningen. He actively participates in professional committees, including chairing the Netherlands Society for Oral Diseases and Maxillofacial Surgery’s Oncology Committee and the National Head and Neck Tumor Visitation Commission.

Key clinical interests include managing treatment side effects, particularly trismus and chemotherapy-related toxicity, while advancing photodynamic therapy efficacy through optical monitoring. His work bridges clinical practice, education, and policy, with a strong emphasis on patient-centered care and healthcare system optimization.
