Jan Mahrt-Smith is an Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management, with a cross-appointment to the School for the Environment. He teaches MBA, Commerce, and Executive Education courses in Corporate Finance and Sustainable Finance. His research focuses on corporate finance strategies and sustainable financial practices, aiming to align economic goals with environmental and social responsibility. He has consulted for institutions like Citibank, Scotia, and Corus Entertainment. Jan holds a PhD in Financial Economics from MIT (1998) and previously served on the faculty of the London Business School (1998–2002).
Research interests include corporate finance mechanisms, capital structure optimization, and integrating ESG criteria into financial decision-making. His work emphasizes long-term shareholder value through sustainable practices and risk management.
Jan has been recognized with the highest teaching awards from MBA students and the Dean, underscoring his commitment to education. He currently supervises Master's and PhD students in finance-related research projects and engages in industry collaborations through consulting and project advisement.
