Professor Jan Dickinson is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Maternal Fetal Medicine) at The University of Western Australia, affiliated with the Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She leads the Maternal Fetal Medicine Service at King Edward Memorial Hospital and previously headed its Ultrasound Department (1996–2020). Her expertise includes prenatal diagnosis, perinatal loss, and preterm birth prevention. She served as Editor-in-Chief of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (2010–2015).
Education: Trained in obstetrics and gynaecology in Perth, completing a Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship at the University of Texas, Houston, USA.
Research focuses on fetal medicine innovations like next-generation sequencing for prenatal diagnosis and universal NIPT for Rhesus status. Major projects include state-wide preterm birth prevention and long-term outcomes of congenital anomalies. Grants include NHMRC-funded studies on fetal Doppler imaging and molecular diagnostics.
Awards: 2021 Australia Day Honours (AM) for medical education contributions. Active in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, mentoring residents, registrars, midwives, and sonographers.
Current projects explore NIPT feasibility, perinatal genetic testing attitudes, and multidisciplinary fetal medicine approaches.
