Jamie Newbold serves as Provost and Deputy Principal at Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), a position reflecting his significant leadership in agricultural and rural sciences. His academic career spans over three decades, with previous roles as Professor of Animal Science and Director of Research and Enterprise at Aberystwyth University's Institute of Biological and Rural Sciences, and 16 years at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen. As a distinguished researcher in animal science, he maintains active roles in numerous research projects and committees including the Main Scottish Research Providers organization where he serves as Chair.
Dr. Newbold earned his BSc Honors in Agricultural Biochemistry and Nutrition from Newcastle University (1978-1981) followed by a PhD in Dairy Science from the University of Glasgow (1981-1984). His doctoral research focused on "Microbial metabolism of lactic acid in the rumen" at the Hannah Research Institute in Scotland, establishing the foundation for his lifelong research interests.
His research program centers on understanding and manipulating gut ecosystems to improve animal productivity while reducing the environmental impact of animal husbandry. This work spans rumen microbiology, methane mitigation strategies, microbial metabolism, and sustainable livestock production systems. His fingerprint analysis reveals strong expertise in Rumen (100%), Protozoa (32%), Rumen Microorganism (30%), Methane (29%), Rumen Fermentation (26%), Ciliates (23%), Microbiome (17%), and Liquid (16%) research areas.
Analysis of his recent publications shows a clear trend toward multi-omics approaches to understand rumen microbiomes, development of nutritional strategies for methane mitigation, and climate-friendly ruminant production systems. His work increasingly incorporates interdisciplinary approaches, combining microbiology, environmental science, and agricultural systems thinking to address sustainability challenges in livestock production.
As a dedicated mentor, Dr. Newbold has successfully supervised 19 PhD students over the past decade, with research topics spanning biofilms in the rumen, molecular profiling of the bovine gut, microbial stability in equine hindgut, gene transfer in gut protozoa, lipases in the rumen, core metagenomes, early life programming of the rumen, methane mitigation, microbial communities contributing to methane production, fiber digestion manipulation, and improving productivity while decreasing environmental damage.
His research leadership extends to directing substantial funding from diverse sources including BBSRC, DEFRA, EU programs (FP7, Horizon 2020), industry partners, and government bodies across multiple countries. Major projects include the Advanced Training Partnership for Sustainable and Efficient Food Production (£2.5 million), multiple BBSRC grants on rumen microbiota and microbiome dynamics, EU initiatives on methane reduction and climate change adaptation, and numerous industry collaborations focused on practical applications for livestock producers.
