Jamie Monson

Dr. Jamie Monson is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of History at Michigan State University (MSU), where she also directs the African Studies program. Her career began with Peace Corps service in Kenya (1980), followed by a PhD in African History from UCLA (1991). She previously taught at Carleton College before joining MSU in 2015.

Her research focuses on environmental history of Tanzania, anti-colonial resistance in German East Africa, and the TAZARA railway's role in Sino-African relations. Recent work examines technology transfer in Chinese aid and gender dynamics in Cold War-era diplomacy through African women's delegations to China during the Cultural Revolution.

Her book Africa’s Freedom Railway (2011) analyzes the transnational history of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway. Current projects explore China-Africa relations and civil diplomacy archives.
