About
Dr. Jamie MacDonald is a Professor and Faculty Fellow in the Department of Chemistry & Physics at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), part of the College of Arts & Sciences. He has been at FGCU since 2007, focusing on curriculum development and research in geology.
Dr. MacDonald holds a PhD in Geology from the University of Albany and a BS in Environmental Geology from SUNY New Paltz. His research interests include ophiolites, volcanic arcs, petrology, tectonics, and earth science education, with a particular emphasis on 'hard rock' studies in the Washington Cascades.
His work explores Mesozoic and Eocene tectonic problems, including projects on active and potentially active faults. He has led NSF-funded initiatives, such as the 'Expanding the Use of Online Remote Electron Microscopy in the Classroom' ($625k, 2013–2018) and the 'GP-EXTRA' program ($150k, 2019–2021), aimed at transforming geoscience education through technology and curriculum innovation.
- Grants:
- NSF Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM (2013–2018)
- IUSE: GEOPATHS-EXTRA (2019–2021)
- Courses Taught: GLY 1010C Physical Geology, GLY 3202C Mineralogy & Petrology, GLY 3420C Tectonics
His research spans ophiolite complex analysis, tectonic evolution of the Cascades, and geochemical investigations of metamorphic and igneous rocks. He actively engages in field-based studies, contributing to regional geodynamic models and educational outreach in geosciences.
