James P. Cramer is a Lecturer at the School of Architecture within the College of Design at Georgia Institute of Technology. He holds a B.S. from Northern State University and an M.A. from the University of St. Thomas, with additional studies at the University of Minnesota, Wharton School of Business, and others. His academic and professional focus revolves around Design Intelligence, Architecture, Interior Design, and Engineering. He has written over 220 articles and authored four influential books, including Design+Enterprise and A Field Guide to Design Management.
Dr. Cramer’s career includes leadership roles as former Chief Executive of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Group Publisher of Architecture Magazine, and founder of the Design Futures Council and Design Intelligence journal. He has advised global architecture firms like SOM, Perkins + Will, and Foster + Partners, and served on prestigious boards such as the National Building Museum and Pritzker Prize committees. His consulting work spans strategic planning, mergers, and organizational visioning.
He has received numerous accolades, including honorary memberships in AIA and IIDA, the Presidential Medal from NCARB, and fellowships from the AIA and Western Behavioral Sciences Institute. His contributions to design education and industry leadership are further highlighted through his nine commencement speeches and roles in shaping professional competitions and interviews.
Cramer currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, and continues to teach, write, and engage in design advocacy.
