James Murphy

James Murphy is Director of the Lang Performing Arts Center (LPAC) at Swarthmore College, with dual affiliations in the Department of Theater (as Lighting Design Instructor) and Dance program (as Resident Lighting Designer). He holds a BA in Technical/Design Theater from SUNY Albany (1981) and oversees LPAC operations including scheduling, rentals, and facility management.

His artistic expertise spans theatrical lighting/sound design and technical production, with notable focus areas including:

• Stage lighting for dance/theater performances
• Sound engineering for classical and contemporary productions
• Technical direction for ensemble and thesis projects

Professional recognition includes a Barrymore Award nomination for sound design in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream at Arden Theater.
