Professor James Hunter MacCabe is a Professor of Epidemiology and Therapeutics at King's College London, affiliated with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and the Department of Psychosis Studies. He splits his time between academic research and clinical practice, serving as an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at the National Psychosis Unit, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. His work focuses on treatment-resistant schizophrenia, personalized medicine, and the application of epidemiological methods to psychiatric research.
Education: MBBS (1995, Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School), intercalated BSc in Psychology and Basic Medical Sciences (1992, UCL), MSc in Epidemiology (2006, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine), PhD (2008). He has held roles including Clinical Senior Lectureship (2009) and has been a Trustee of the mental health charity SANE since 2019.
Research interests include schizophrenia epidemiology, clozapine mechanisms, neurochemistry of treatment resistance, and biomarker discovery. He leads the STRATA consortium, an MRC-funded initiative developing stratified medicine approaches for schizophrenia. Recent studies examine systemic inflammation, cerebral blood flow changes, and immunological markers linked to clozapine response.
Awards: Over 10 notable prizes, including the Best Original Research Paper (2019), BMA Book Commendation (2007), and Royal College of Psychiatrists Fellowship (2014). Grants include MRC and NIHR funding for large-scale trials like the CLEAR study evaluating clozapine in early psychosis.
Teaching: Leads MSc modules in Social & Community Psychiatry, supervises PhD students, and trains clinicians in managing treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Active in professional organizations, including workshops for the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
