Professor James Fox is a distinguished academic affiliated with the Australian National University (ANU) since 1975. He holds the position of Professor in the Department of Pacific Affairs within the College of Asia and the Pacific (part of the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences). Educated at Harvard (AB '62) and Oxford (B Litt. '65, DPhil. '68) as a Rhodes Scholar, he has taught at leading universities including Harvard, Cornell, Duke, Chicago, Leiden, Bielefeld, and École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales.
His research focuses on the history and anthropology of Indonesia and East Timor, with expertise in rural development, resource management, social organization, symbolic systems, linguistic anthropology, and comparative Austronesian ethnology. His recent publications explore Austronesian kinship terminologies, life-course rituals, and cultural symbolism in Eastern Indonesia.
Professor Fox is recognized as a Foreign Fellow of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. He has held visiting professorships at Harvard, National University of Singapore, and Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt.
His projects include policy research on Indonesian forest and land fire management, oral composition studies among Rotinese poets, and alternative livelihoods for traditional Indonesian fishers. He has contributed to edited volumes like Austronesian Paths and Journeys (ANU Press, 2021) and peer-reviewed journal articles in Oceania and Australian Journal of Anthropology.
