Bronwen Douglas is an Honorary Professor at the School of Culture, History, and Language, The Australian National University (ANU). Her career spans over five decades, including roles as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at La Trobe University (1971–1996) and Fellowships at ANU (1997–2012). She holds a BA (Hons) from Adelaide University (1966) and a PhD from ANU (1972).
Her research focuses on the history of race in Oceania, colonial encounters, and the intersection of science and indigenous knowledge. Key projects include Naming Oceania (2010–2017) examining geographic and racial classifications, and Material Encounters (2014–2015) exploring colonial material culture. She has held prestigious fellowships at institutions like the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris.
Awards include the Australian Academy of the Humanities Fellowship (2020) and the Journal of Historical Geography Prize (2014). Her work bridges historical analysis with anthropological methods, emphasizing indigenous agency in colonial narratives.
