Ehnes earned his Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School in 1997 under Sally Thomas, receiving the Peter Mennin Prize for Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in Music. His early training began at age five with protégé status under Canadian violinist Francis Chaplin by age nine, leading to his orchestral debut with L'Orchestre symphonique de Montréal at age 13.
