Jake Weinstein

Jake Weinstein is an Assistant Professor in the Writing and Production for Musical Theater department at Berklee College of Music, based in New York City. His multifaceted career spans composing, lyric writing, directing, choreography, and performance, with works presented at venues such as 54 Below, the American Repertory Theater, and international film festivals.

Weinstein holds a Master of Arts from Berklee NYC in Writing and Production for Musical Theater, a Bachelor of Arts from New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study with a concentration in musical theater, and began his training at the New England Conservatory of Music as their youngest composition student. His educational background informs his holistic approach to theatrical storytelling.

His research and creative interests center on the integration of music, lyrics, and movement in musical theater. He explores collaborative processes across disciplines to create resonant theatrical experiences, as evidenced by his original works including the satirical cabaret Javanka, the musical Through the Frame (co-written with Alexis Kesselman), and the award-winning dance film Ode to the Singing Butler.

Weinstein has been recognized with several awards, including being a Fred Ebb Award Finalist (2024), recipient of the Post-Master's Fellowship at Berklee NYC (2022), and winner of the Golden Key Composition Competition (2017). He is also a two-time semi-finalist for the Eugene O'Neill National Music Theater Conference.

As an educator, Weinstein teaches Lyric Writing, Design Collaborations in the Theater Space, and Score Lab in Berklee NYC's master's program. His pedagogical approach draws from his extensive industry experience, aiming to equip students with craft skills while encouraging bold creative visions. His Post-Master's Fellowship at Berklee NYC further underscores his commitment to advancing musical theater education.
