Adam Gwon

Adam Gwon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Writing and Production for Musical Theater at Berklee College of Music, where he teaches musical theater composition and lyric writing. He is based at Berklee NYC and is deeply engaged in both artistic practice and education in contemporary musical theater.

His research and creative interests lie at the intersection of storytelling, music, and theater, with a focus on emotionally resonant narratives, modern character development, and lyrical innovation in musical theater. His work explores themes such as identity, belonging, ambition, and the complexities of human relationships in contemporary urban life.

Gwon has received numerous prestigious awards recognizing excellence in musical theater writing, including the Kleban Prize, Fred Ebb Award, Richard Rodgers Award, and the Frederick Loewe Award. These honors reflect his significant contributions to the field and his standing among the leading voices in new American musicals.

He has no formal advisees listed, but mentors emerging writers through teaching and masterclasses.

Gwon’s work has been performed at iconic venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center, and recorded by leading artists such as Audra McDonald, Kelli O’Hara, and Brian d’Arcy James. His cast albums are released by Ghostlight Records, Nonesuch, and Broadway Records.
