About
Jaime Gómez Rivas is a Full Professor and Chair of Surface Photonics in the Department of Applied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He holds affiliations with the Center for Quantum Materials and Technology Eindhoven, the Center for Terahertz Science and Technology Eindhoven, and the ICMS Core. His research focuses on strong light-matter coupling phenomena, THz photonics, and optoelectronics, emphasizing experimental work on resonant nanostructures.
Education: PhD in Physics from the University of Amsterdam (2002), followed by postdoctoral research at RWTH Aachen on THz plasmonics. He led the Surface Photonics group at AMOLF (2005–2015) and transitioned fully to TU/e in 2018. Notable grants include ERC Starting and Proof of Concept grants, NWO-VICI, and the Facebook Academy Award.
Research Interests: Plasmonics, nanophotonics, THz spectroscopy, and applications in optoelectronics. His work explores phenomena like strong coupling in nanostructured materials and their use in biosensors, light-emitting diodes, and energy technologies.
Projects: Active in initiatives such as Terahertz Integrated Biosensing (TeraIBs) and THz Spectroscopy for Electrochemistry. He also contributes to education, designing courses like 'Manipulate Your Wave' for master’s students.
- Awards: Best PhD Thesis in Physics (2016), Biomolecular Sensing at THz Frequencies (2023), Co-founder of the Center for Terahertz Science (2021).
- Labs/Teams: Surface Photonics Group, THz Sensing and Optoelectronics Lab.
