Jacob (Jake) Martinez is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona's Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences. He joined the faculty in May 2022, combining clinical practice, teaching, and graduate student supervision. His career focuses on adult patients with swallowing disorders and cognitive-communication impairments stemming from traumatic brain injury, stroke, and head/neck cancer. He holds a BA in Communication/Journalism from the University of New Mexico (1999) and an MA in Communication Disorders from New Mexico State University (post-2006).
With military experience as an active-duty USAF member (1999-2006), he specializes in veterans' cognitive-communication disorders. Clinically, he performs Modified Barium Swallow studies, Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluations, and applies therapies like Ampcare Effective Swallow Protocol. Licensed by Arizona Department of Health Services and holding ASHA's CCC-SLP certification, he works across acute care, outpatient, and skilled nursing facilities.
His teaching includes SLHS 458/558/658 courses on clinical speech pathology. Current roles involve on-campus clinical supervision and direct patient care.
