Jac Batey

Dr. Jac Batey is an Associate Professor of Illustration at the University of Portsmouth's Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, School of Architecture, Art and Design. She is a practice-based researcher specializing in artists' books, zines, and visual narratives, particularly focusing on mental health and social commentary. Her work includes the Zineopolis art-zine collection and the Future Fantasteek! zine series. She has received grants such as the Arts Council's 'Developing Your Creative Practice' award and recognition for innovative use of digital media during the pandemic.

Her research methods involve drawing, animation, and interactive installations, with a focus on extending academic rigor in illustration. Notable achievements include a Vice Chancellor’s Recognition Award (2021) and a Common Ground Research Network Excellence Award (2020). She contributes to academic networks like the Zine Librarians Unconference and collaborates on projects like the Wellcome-funded 'Crafting Contention' exploring mental health narratives in zines.

Batey has exhibited globally, including at the Royal Academy, V&A, and international museums. Her work is held in collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (USA) and Tate Britain (UK).
