Gillian Sampson is a Course Leader for the BA(Hons) Illustration program at Norwich University of the Arts (NUA), where she has been since 2019. She concurrently pursues a part-time practice-based PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University’s School of Art, exploring illustration’s potential to generate stories from archival objects. Her academic and professional career spans over 30 years, combining freelance illustration, teaching, and research.
Education includes Illustration at the Royal College of Art, complemented by awards such as the Vogue Cecil Beaton Award (1986) and a Folio Society Award (1987). Her research focuses on narrative illustration, diversity in children’s books, and mixed-media practices. Notable exhibitions include ‘Fieldwork from Northern Places’ (2018) and collaborations with institutions like Ji Lin University of Art and Media, China.
