Gillian Sampson

Gillian Sampson is a Course Leader for the BA(Hons) Illustration program at Norwich University of the Arts (NUA), where she has been since 2019. She concurrently pursues a part-time practice-based PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University’s School of Art, exploring illustration’s potential to generate stories from archival objects. Her academic and professional career spans over 30 years, combining freelance illustration, teaching, and research.

Education includes Illustration at the Royal College of Art, complemented by awards such as the Vogue Cecil Beaton Award (1986) and a Folio Society Award (1987). Her research focuses on narrative illustration, diversity in children’s books, and mixed-media practices. Notable exhibitions include ‘Fieldwork from Northern Places’ (2018) and collaborations with institutions like Ji Lin University of Art and Media, China.

Teaching emphasizes creativity and professional practice, with courses on narrative genres and industry engagement. She has held external examiner roles at the University of Central Lancashire, University of Chester, and University of Huddersfield. Awards include the Fellow of The Higher Education Academy (2017) and recognition for teaching excellence (2003-2004). Her work bridges academic and creative realms, advancing inclusive storytelling and visual arts education.
