Ivan Muñoz Diaz

Ivan Muñoz Diaz serves as a Professor in the Department of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Theory at the School of Civil Engineering, Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), with continuous academic service since October 2012. He is an active member of the Structural Engineering Group (affiliated since 2012) and the R&D+i Center for Smart and Sustainable Civil Infrastructure (CIVILis) (joined November 2024).

His research focuses on experimental and theoretical structural analysis, specializing in reinforced concrete behavior, shear capacity mechanisms, structural reinforcement methodologies, and conservation of historic engineering structures. The Structural Engineering Group conducts extensive laboratory testing using UPM's Structures Laboratory infrastructure, investigating diverse structural typologies through full-scale experiments, reduced-scale models, and real-world structure assessments.

Professor Muñoz Diaz leads numerous research initiatives including Concrete reinforced with recycled fibers, Shear capacity of elements without transverse reinforcement, Pillar reinforcement techniques, Exterior Prestressing applications, and studies on dynamic analysis, vibration cancellation, and historic factory building preservation. His work bridges theoretical modeling with practical engineering solutions for civil infrastructure resilience.

Within UPM's academic framework, he contributes to civil engineering education through theoretical instruction, practical sessions, laboratory experiments, and site visits at the School of Civil Engineering, which has trained Spanish civil engineers since its founding in 1802 under the legacy of Agustín de Betancourt.
