Istvan Nemeth is an Associate Professor at the Department of Dutch Studies, Institute of German and Netherlandic Studies, Faculty of Humanities at Károli Gáspár Reformed University in Budapest, Hungary. Previously, he served as Chief Curator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.
Dr. Nemeth specializes in the art and cultural history of the Netherlands, with particular expertise in Dutch Golden Age painting, especially 17th century Dutch genre painting and still life. His research focuses on iconographic analysis, cultural context, and the interpretation of artistic works. He has published extensively on Dutch art history, including monographs such as The Deceptive Mirrors of Life. Dutch Still Life Painting in the Age of Rembrandt (2008) and Jan van Eycktől a Bauhausig (2024).
His scholarly output demonstrates consistent engagement with Dutch art across centuries, from early Netherlandish painting through modern Dutch art. Recent publications show expansion into related areas including dance history, alternative communities, and women artists, while maintaining his foundational expertise in Dutch visual culture.
