Isadora Ataíde Fonseca

Isadora Ataíde Fonseca is an Assistant Professor and researcher at the Faculty of Human Sciences, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, and affiliated with the Research Centre for Communication and Culture (CECC). She has been an active academic since 2019, contributing significantly to research in media history, journalism, and colonial/post-colonial studies.

Her educational background includes a PhD in Sociology of Communication and Culture from ICS-UL (2014). She teaches advanced courses in Communication Studies, Media History, Sociology of Communication, and Public & Audiences.

Her research centers on the intersections of media, ideology, and empire, particularly in Portuguese-speaking countries. Key themes include the role of the press in colonial empires, the formation of imperial public spheres, and the dynamics between journalism and political regimes. Her work spans historical and sociological perspectives, focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries.

The recent publications reflect a strong trend in analyzing colonial media systems, elite control of press, and cultural narratives of empire. Her work combines historical analysis with critical theory, particularly in post-colonial and ideological frameworks, often focusing on Portuguese Africa and the broader Lusophone world.

She has co-edited significant volumes such as Creating and Opposing Empire (Routledge, 2023) and authored A Imprensa e o Império na África Portuguesa, 1842-1974 (2020). Her research is supported by active participation in projects like A História na Era da (Des)Informação (2021–2023), where she contributed as a researcher.

She has supervised student research, including a case study on corporate social responsibility communication. She is also involved in academic events, serving as organizer and chair in seminars and conferences related to media and communication.
