About
Irving Bigio is Affiliate Faculty and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University, developing optical technologies for minimally-invasive diagnostics and surgery. His research creates tools for cancer detection, neural imaging, and surgical guidance.
Research focuses on:
- Elastic scattering spectroscopy for cancer margin delineation
- Birefringence microscopy for neural and myelin imaging
- Optical coherence tomography for brain mapping
- Real-time intraoperative tissue characterization
Recent publications (2025-2012) demonstrate applications in oral cancer surgery guidance, Alzheimer's vascular analysis, skin cancer assessment, and neural activity imaging. Article trends show progressive development of quantitative optical techniques for clinical decision support.
Fellowships include OSA, ASLMS, and AIMBE. Received Los Alamos Inventor Awards (1994, 1996, 1999). Authored 'Quantitative Biomedical Optics' textbook.
