About
Xavier Intes is a full-time Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he has held his position since 2007. His academic journey began with a PhD in Physics from Université de Bretagne Occidentale (France) in 1998, followed by postdoctoral appointments at the University of Pennsylvania under Nobel laureate Britton Chance and Arjun Yodh.
- Research Director at Advanced Research Technologies Inc.
- NSF CAREER Award recipient
- Fellow of AIMBE, OSA, and SPIE
Dr. Intes leads the Quantitative Biomedical Imaging Laboratory (founded 2007), focusing on advanced optical imaging platforms for pre-clinical and clinical applications. His work integrates fluorescence lifetime imaging, deep learning algorithms, and multimodal imaging systems to address challenges in cancer diagnostics and surgical skill assessment.
His recent research trends emphasize 3D tumor spheroid analysis, real-time fluorescence lifetime imaging, and AI-enabled surgical skill evaluation, with significant contributions to fNIRS data analysis and organelle topology profiling. The laboratory has successfully commercialized imaging technologies through NSF I-Corps participation and maintains active collaborations with Albany Medical College and MARS Bioimaging Ltd.
Scientific accolades include:
- NSF CAREER Award (2012)
- AIMBE Fellowship (2025)
- OSA Fellowship (2025)
- SPIE Fellowship (2025)
Dr. Intes has mentored numerous PhD students including Nanxue Yuan, Navid Nizam, and Ismail Erbas, with research supported by NIH grants and NSF funding. His laboratory develops cutting-edge optical tomography platforms and photon-counting micro-CT systems for tumor xenograft models.
