Irene Guttilla Reed

Irene Guttilla Reed is the Biology Department Chair and Professor of Biology at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), where she has been since 2010. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut Health Center and a B.S. from the University of New Haven. Her dual focus lies in cancer biology research and innovative STEM education practices. Dr. Reed’s research emphasizes breast and uterine cancer progression, metastasis, and the role of genetic changes in patient outcomes and treatment responses. She also actively develops course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) to enhance student critical thinking and communication skills.

Her educational outreach includes collaborations with local high schools, grant-funded mentorship programs, and national advocacy for undergraduate research. She has won the Stack Award for Teaching Excellence (2018) and is affiliated with institutions like the Tribeta Biological Honors Society and the Student Research & Creative Activity (SRCA) initiative at USJ. Dr. Reed’s pedagogical work integrates writing assignments, peer assessment, and inclusive teaching strategies to bridge research and classroom learning.
