Ioannis Economopoulos is a Professor of Veterinary Microbiology at the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA), School of Animal Biosciences. He serves as Dean of the School of Animal Biosciences (2019–2022) and former President of the European College of Veterinary Microbiology (ECVM, 2016–2021). His academic career includes a DVM from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, an MSc in Veterinary Microbiology from the Royal Veterinary College (University College London), and a PhD in Molecular Microbiology from Aristotle University in collaboration with the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Research focuses on infectious diseases in animals, molecular diagnostics (PCR applications), autoimmune disorders, and public health implications. He coordinates/co-leads 20 international research programs and holds 6 European patents as Principal Inventor. His work addresses zoonotic pathogens like Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis, bovine tuberculosis, and bee-associated viral infections.
