About
Ingrid Eftedal is a Research Professor at NTNU's Department of Circulation and Imaging within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Her research focuses on circulatory physiology and baromedicine, particularly studying human and animal responses to extreme environments like deep-sea diving. She leads projects supported by Norwegian industry and regulatory agencies through the Norwegian Baromedical Joint Industry Project (Norwegian Baromedical JIP).
Her work emphasizes understanding physiological adaptations to hyperbaric conditions, decompression sickness mechanisms, and occupational health risks for commercial divers. Key collaborations include studies on biomarker development (e.g., salivary, urinary, and microbial indicators) and genomic responses to diving stressors. She co-edited volumes on Survival in Extreme Environments and Women in Environmental Physiology, highlighting gender perspectives in scientific research.
Eftedal’s research also involves translational approaches linking animal models (rat studies) to human data, with a focus on cardiovascular health, oxidative stress, and atherosclerosis risks. She supervises graduate students in topics ranging from microbiome shifts during saturation diving to vascular function biomarkers.
- Key Projects:
- Decompression sickness molecular mechanisms using rodent models
- Psychosocial demands in saturation diving environments
- Hydration and biomarker studies for occupational safety
Labs/Teams: Active contributor to the AHL Center at NTNU, focusing on hyperbaric and environmental physiology research.
